What Is BioTools Innovator?

BioTools Innovator is an accelerator focused on life science tools and diagnostics. Selected companies are assigned mentors from corporate partners and take part in networking, workshops and pitching to investors, manufacturers and providers. The 2027 program is mostly virtual and runs June through mid-October, with two mandatory in-person events, one at the start and one at the end. The cycle closes at the Capstone, where the finals competition is held.

What Problem Is BioTools Innovator Trying to Solve?

Companies that sell tools, instruments, services and software to drug developers often lack structured access to the corporate partners and investors who decide which technologies get adopted. BioTools Innovator pairs these startups with partner mentors and a public pitch stage. The VANGUARD track, run jointly with BARDA, adds a health security angle: it supports biotools startups whose solutions improve drug discovery and development, biomanufacturing, sample processing and the bioanalysis of emerging pathogens.

Priority Capability Areas: What BioTools Innovator Is Looking For

  • Drug discovery, development and delivery technologies: Tools sold to drug developers, not the drugs themselves.
  • Research products and instruments: Lab instruments and research products for life science R&D.
  • R&D and manufacturing services: Service companies supporting development and manufacturing.
  • Diagnostics: Diagnostic technologies within the life science tools scope.
  • Software: Software products for life science research and development.
  • VANGUARD focus: Drug discovery and development, biomanufacturing, sample processing and diagnostics, and bioanalysis of emerging pathogens.

Funding and Award Terms

  • Prize capital: Accepted companies are eligible for $300,000+ in prize capital competitions.
  • Finals winner: $250,000 for the finals competition winner, awarded at the BioTools Innovator Capstone.
  • Finalists: Up to four finalists will receive $25,000.
  • Video prize: $10,000 for the best video competition winner.
  • Application: There is no fee to apply.
  • Program fee: For accepted companies, the program fee is $15,000, payable in cash (upfront or in two equal installments) or through a $50,000 SAFE note. BTI scholarships are available for qualifying companies and are applied at acceptance.
  • VANGUARD: The VANGUARD program fee is covered by a 100% scholarship offered by BARDA.

Eligibility Requirements and Participation

  • Stage: Pre-seed through Series B, with a prototype and proof of concept in hand or close to it.
  • Capital raised: Companies that have raised up to $25M in equity funding.
  • Location: Companies headquartered anywhere are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a clear U.S. market strategy.
  • Out of scope: Companies developing drugs, biologics, cell therapies or gene therapies are out of scope.
  • Incorporation: Founders who have not yet incorporated may apply, but the company must be incorporated before the program begins.
  • Leadership: Leadership with capacity to engage for the full program, including the two mandatory in-person events.
  • Cohort size: The program typically selects the top twenty companies each cycle. Up to ten companies are selected for VANGUARD.

How to Apply

  • Create a profile: Start the application in the Innovator Portal at pro.innovator.org/applications.
  • Complete one application: Most companies finish in one to two hours and can save and return before applications close on December 1.
  • VANGUARD consideration: VANGUARD is considered through the same application. There is no separate form and no opt-in.
  • Attend an info session: Sessions are scheduled for November 12, 2026 (joint with MedTech Innovator) and November 20, 2026.
  • Submit early: No closing time or time zone is posted, so plan to submit well before December 1.

What Happens After You Submit?

  • Review: Applications go through Radar, the multi-stage evaluation process shared with MedTech Innovator.
  • Timeline: Evaluation runs December through May, with notifications in late May 2027.
  • Feedback: Every applicant receives structured feedback.
  • Program: Selected companies start in June and finish at the Capstone, where the finals competition and video prize are judged.

Is This Opportunity a Good Fit for Your Company?

This is a strong fit if you sell instruments, research products, services, diagnostics or software to drug developers, have a prototype and proof of concept in hand or close to it, and have raised up to $25M in equity funding. It is not a fit if your company develops a drug, biologic, cell therapy or gene therapy. Companies whose tools touch biomanufacturing, sample processing or emerging pathogen analysis should frame their application with the VANGUARD focus areas in mind, since VANGUARD is considered through the same application.
