When Military End-User Validation Unlocks a New Funding Conversation

Dual Funding Pathway

Services: AFWERX Program Support · End-User Identification & Facilitation · Stakeholder Engagement

Overview

BW&CO partnered with a VC-backed human performance startup navigating the AFWERX Direct-to-Phase-II program to do what the award process alone cannot: connect the technology to the right military end user at the right moment. That connection didn't just validate the solution — it opened an entirely new funding conversation the client hadn't anticipated walking in the door.

The Challenge

For deep-tech and human performance companies pursuing AFWERX funding, winning the award is only part of the challenge. The harder problem is demonstrating that a real warfighter or military stakeholder sees the relevance of the technology and will actively champion it. Without that credibility, even well-funded startups can find themselves technically compliant but operationally invisible — unable to accelerate toward deployment or attract follow-on capital tied to mission-readiness signals.

This client had strong technology and venture backing, but needed a credible pathway into the defense ecosystem. They needed the right end-user advocate, not just a favorable technical review.

Our Approach

BW&CO provided end-to-end support across the client's AFWERX Direct-to-Phase-II engagement, with focused effort on the activities most likely to drive real-world traction:

  • End-user identification and qualification: Researched and identified military end users whose operational needs aligned specifically with the client's human performance solution

  • Stakeholder outreach and facilitation: Coordinated and facilitated a direct meeting between the client and a vetted end user within the relevant military community

  • Meeting preparation and positioning: Prepared the client to present their solution in operationally relevant terms — framing capability in the language of the end user's actual mission challenges

  • Ongoing program navigation: Provided counsel on AFWERX program requirements and positioning throughout the engagement

Results

The end-user meeting exceeded expectations. The military stakeholder responded with immediate, unambiguous enthusiasm — affirming that the solution addressed a genuine operational need. That validation alone would have been a win. But the conversation quickly evolved: the end user expressed interest in supporting the AFWERX project directly and raised the possibility of deploying separate funding resources to accelerate the work outside the standard program timeline.

In a single facilitated meeting, the client moved from seeking program validation to fielding an unsolicited inquiry about how much capital they needed to get started. That shift — from applicant to sought-after partner — is the outcome BW&CO works to create for every defense-facing client we support.
