Securing $3M in Federal Funding for a Neurotechnology Innovator
$3,034,774 secured from CDMRP's JWMRP Program
Full-service support: strategy • proposal writing • contracting • project management
Overview
BW&CO partnered with an early-stage neurotechnology company to pursue a highly competitive federal research award through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) Joint Warfighter Medical Research Program (JWMRP). From initial strategy development through award execution, BW&CO provided end-to-end support — enabling the client to secure more than $3 million in funding and position their technology for continued advancement in a demanding federal research environment.
The Challenge
The client had developed a promising neurotechnology platform with clear applications for warfighter health and performance. However, federal research funding — particularly through CDMRP — demands a level of proposal rigor, regulatory familiarity, and administrative infrastructure that most early-stage companies are not equipped to manage on their own.
The JWMRP program is intensely competitive, with strict formatting requirements, evaluator expectations rooted in military medical priorities, and a procurement and contracting process that can stall or derail even technically strong applications. The client needed a partner who could manage the full scope of the effort — not just help write a proposal, but shepherd the engagement from first concept to funded award.
Our Approach
BW&CO took a structured, full-lifecycle approach to the engagement, covering five integrated workstreams:
Strategy Development: BW&CO worked closely with the client to align their technology's capabilities with JWMRP priorities, shaping a compelling research narrative that spoke directly to the program's evaluation criteria and warfighter relevance.
Proposal Writing: The team led the development of all proposal components — technical volume, management plan, budget justification, and supporting documentation — ensuring the submission was scientifically credible, clearly written, and fully compliant with solicitation requirements.
Administrative Support: BW&CO managed the logistical demands of the submission process, including registration management, document formatting, and coordination of submission deadlines across multiple federal portals.
Contracting Support: Following the award notification, BW&CO guided the client through the contracting process, helping to resolve technical and administrative requirements that are often unfamiliar to first-time federal awardees.
Project Management: Throughout the engagement, BW&CO served as the central coordination point, keeping the effort on schedule and ensuring alignment between the client's internal team and all external requirements.
Results
The engagement resulted in a successful award of $3,034,774 from CDMRP's JWMRP program — a meaningful validation of both the client's technology and the strength of the proposal BW&CO helped build. Beyond the funding itself, the client emerged from the engagement with a stronger understanding of the federal research landscape, an established contracting relationship with the government, and a foundation for pursuing future program opportunities.
For an early-stage company, securing this level of non-dilutive federal funding represents far more than a financial milestone. It accelerates development timelines, establishes credibility with future partners and investors, and advances technology that directly supports the health and performance of the warfighter population JWMRP was designed to serve.
